Communion Devotional

Matthew 16:13–17 (ESV)

13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”

14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”

16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.

Message

“But who do you say that I am?”

This question came up last month as I was working on my capstone project. It is a question we all must answer, and that answer can tell us about our eternal security.

Who is Jesus to you?

The Mormon’s say Jesus is Lucifer’s spiritual brother. Just another created being, another god among many gods? Is that who Jesus is? No, that Jesus is not real and that Jesus cannot save you.

The Jehovah’s Witnesses say Jesus is Michael the Archangel, the first creation of the Jehovah God. Is that who Jesus is? No, that Jesus is not real and that Jesus cannot save you.

Islam claims Jesus was merely a prophet, was born of a virgin, but was not divine. They deny He went to the cross, thus denying his death and resurrection. Is that who Jesus is? No, that Jesus is not real and that Jesus cannot save you.

As the Apostle Peter said, Jesus, the real Jesus, is the Christ, the Son of the living God. Christ, the second person of the Trinity, chose to take on flesh and go to the cross.

1 Peter 2:24 says, “He (Jesus) bore our sins in His body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By His wounds you have been healed.”

On the night Jesus was taken, he took bread and after blessing it, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.”

And He took a cup, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”

Lord, thank you for everything. Who do we say you are? You are God, who took upon flesh so you could bare the punishment we deserve. It is only through your sacrifice, your shed blood, and the wonderful Grace you give that we may have life. We love you, LORD. In Jesus name, AMEN.
